South Africa's ESKOM generates 98% of the power requirements for South Africa and 60% of Africa's. ESKOM has generating capacity of about 40,000 MW. 89.1% from coal-fired generating plants.
40,000 MW vs 2,700 MW.
ESKOM currently supplies power to Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe. Maybe Nigeria should join the list. There is no way this country can develop without electricity.
That is why the GDP for South Africa in 2009(in millions of dollars) is 277,400 and Nigeria is 165,400. When you look at the GDP per capita which divides the GDP by the population, South Africa (estimate for 2009) was $5,700 while Nigeria (estimate for 2009) is a mere $1,100.
We are not producing enough and there is no way we can do that without a good electricity infrastructure.
